Bucknell Women's Rowing Wins Four of Five Races vs. Cincinnati and West Virginia
April 22, 2006 SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. - In the first of two home events Saturday, the Bucknell women's rowing team took four of the five races against Cincinnati and West Virginia on the Susquehanna River early Saturday morning. The Bison won the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four races. Bucknell will host Buffalo and Patriot League rival Colgate Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. on the Susquehanna River. The races, which were moved up to begin at 7 a.m. instead of 9 a.m. due to forecasted heavy rain in the Susquehanna Valley, took place in a light-to-moderate rain on relatively flat water. Bucknell's varsity eight of coxswain Coral Swartz, stroke-Kelly Henkler, 7-Jannie Trayes, 6-Kate Brewster-Duffy, 5-Christine Drasba, 4-Brittany Kaplan, 3-Page Kannor, 2-Lauren Olsen and bow-Sophie Bird got the day started with a nearly 14 second victory over West Virginia. The Bison timed in at 8 minutes, 13.89 seconds, while the Mountaineers finished in 8:27.59. Cincinnati took third in 8:43.90. The second varsity eight featured another victory for Bucknell by a large margin as it won with a time of 8:24.70 over Cincinnati's 8:40.63. The Bison second varsity eight was comprised of coxswain-Jeweliet Yost, stroke-Caitlin Doolin, 7-Whittney Henry, 6-Jessica Glenn, 5-Laura Roberts, 4-Gillian Carter, 3-Erin Henry, 2-Alexis Will and bow-Amanda Roof. Bucknell again won by nearly 20 seconds in the varsity four as it was the only team to break the 10-minute barrier with a time of 9:59.95. West Virginia came in second with a 10:19.88 showing, while Cincinnati took third in 10:31.74. Coxswain-Lisa Patel, stroke-Sarah Wohlman, 3-Cara Cox-Steiner, 2-Julie Curtis and bow-Amanda Gallina comprised the Bison varsity four. The second varsity four of coxswain-Anna Latimer, stroke-Susan Shadle, 3-Jayne Kubat, 2-Courtney Luzzi and bow-Amy VanNostrand posted Bucknell's final victory of the day, beating out second-place West Virginia "A" with a time of 10:04.12. The Mountaineers finished in 10:17.09, while Cincinnati (10:37.56) and West Virginia's "B" boat rounded out the field. The novice eight of coxswain-Christine Kassab, stroke-Julia Martin, 7-Kelly McGaw, 6-Katrina Dold, 5-Lisa Prasto, 4-Beth Mooney, 3-Lauren Gibbons, 2-Vicki Cohen and bow-Renee Perry fought hard against Cincinnati, but came in second with a time of 9:03.66 in the two-boat race. The Bearcats posted a time of 8:50.71. Bucknell will host Buffalo and Colgate at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon on the Susquehanna River.
