Bucknell Women's Rowing Places Four on All-Patriot League Team

April 30, 2008

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Just days after winning its third consecutive Patriot League title last weekend on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J., the Bucknell women's rowing team had a league-most four student-athletes earn positions on the All-Patriot League Team, announced Wednesday by the league office. Seniors Sophie Bird (Lincolndale, N.Y./Somers), Katherine Brewster-Duffy (Stonington, Conn./St. George's School) and Jennie Trayes (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack), as well as junior coxswain Jeweliet Yost (Ventnor, N.J./Atlantic City), were the four Bison honored.

All four of Bucknell's selections to the all-league team were members of the varsity eight that easily defeated second-place Navy, clinching the title for the Bison. Bucknell's boat, which has compiled a 7-1 record this season, defeated the Mids by nearly 15 seconds as it finished in 6:51.65. Navy timed in at 7:06.51.

Bucknell's varsity four and second varsity eight both placed second in their races, meaning the varsity eight needed to win in order to clinch a third consecutive title for the Bison. The varsity eight victory earned Bucknell a tie for the points lead with Navy, but it earned the title based on winning the varsity eight event.

Brewster-Duffy (2007, 2008), Trayes (2006, 2008) and Yost (2007, 2008) were each honored for the second time. Bird appeared on the all-league squad for the first time in her career.

In addition to the All-Patriot League plaudits, the varsity eight copped the Boat of the Year award for the third straight year.

The format for the All-Patriot League Women's Rowing Team is predicated on the team's finish in the varsity eight race at the Patriot League championship. The first-place team earns three rowers and one coxswain, the second-place boat earns three rowers, while the third-place boat places two rowers on the all-league squad. Both the fourth and fifth-place finishers have one all-league selection.

The Bison will be back in action this Sunday, May 4, when they travel back to the Cooper River for the ECAC Championships.
