Patriot League Announces its All-Decade Baseball Team

March 15, 2001

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Patriot League announced its All-Decade Baseball Team today and three former Bucknell University players were among the 20 players honored as members of the squad. Kevin Silverman '96, Alex Inclan '97 and Frank Fresconi `2000 will represent the Orange and Blue on the team.

The team, comprised of two players at each of the nine field positions and two "wild card" players, includes student-athletes from the inception of the league in 1990 up and through the 2000 season. A committee consisting of head coaches, institutional sports information liaisons and administrative liaisons conducted team selection for each of the 22 Patriot League sports.

Kevin Silverman led Bucknell to its first Patriot League Championship title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1996. The All-Patriot League third baseman was selected as the league's Player of the Year following that season after batting .309 with 12 home runs and 43 RBIs. He set then single-season marks for home runs, RBIs, runs scored (45) and total bases (96). As a junior, Silverman set a Bucknell and Patriot League mark with a 27-game hitting streak.

Silverman, who was on the junior varsity squad as a freshman, posted a .334 career average, had 84 RBIs, scored 78 runs, and smacked 19 home runs. Following graduation he enrolled in the doctorate program at the University of Colorado where he has since earned his doctorate in physics.

Alex Inclan was a two-time All-Patriot League outfielder and a teammate of Silverman's on the 1996 championship and NCAA Tournament team. He hit .359 and led the team as a junior, and batted .345 with a then school record 45 RBIs as a senior in 1997. He set a school mark for assists in a single-season by an outfielder with eight, and had a school record 14 during his career. Inclan was the recipient of the WMLP/WVLY Award at the senior awards banquet. Sponsored by the then flagship station of the Bison Sports Network, the award was presented "in recognition of exceptional athletic achievement and contribution to Bucknell athletics."

Inclan posted a .329 career average, had 82 RBIs, scored 96 runs and belted 14 home runs for the Orange and Blue. Following graduation, he had a short stint with the Ohio Valley Redcoats in the Frontier League.

Frank Fresconi capped his Cinderella career with Patriot League Player of the Year honors his senior season. The Bison catcher/designated hitter was cut as a freshman when he tried out for the team as a second baseman, but his persistence paid off in the form of conference, regional and national recognition at the end of his Bison career.

He set Bucknell and Patriot League records with 14 home runs and 70 runs batted in and ranked second on the team with a .384 average last year. He matched the Bucknell single-game mark with eight RBIs against Army on April 29, and led the conference in six statistical categories. In addition to Player of the Year honors, he was named All-Patriot League First Team for the second year in a row and an ECAC Division I All-Star. According to the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission, the sponsoring body of the Johnny Bench Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award, Fresconi was ranked as one of the Top-40 catchers in the nation.

One of the highlights of his career came in the Navy series during his senior season when he hit grand slams in back-to-back at bats. His first gave the Bison a last-inning, come-from-behind win, and the second came in the opening inning of the nightcap.

Fresconi carried over his hard work into the classroom, earning Academic All-America Third Team honors following his senior season. He graduated with a 3.30 grade-point average and a degree in mechanical engineering. In addition to the national academic recognition, he was tabbed as the Patriot League's Scholar-Athlete for the sport of baseball.

Fresconi is currently enrolled in the graduate program at the University of Delaware, and is using his final year of eligibility to play for the Blue Hens.
