Baseball Pitcher Kevin McDowell Drafted by the Detroit Tigers

June 12, 2001

LEWISBURG, Pa. --- Bucknell junior pitcher Kevin McDowell (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) was taken in the 15th round of the 2001 Major League Baseball draft by the Detroit Tigers earlier this week.

The hard throwing left-hander, who consistently throws in the low 90's, was 2-5 this season with a 6.44 earned run average on Bucknell's Patriot League Championship team. He owns a career record of 14-11, has struck out 145 batters, and was an All-Patriot League First Team selection in 1999.

"It's a real tribute to Kevin that he could come back from Tommy John surgery in 14 months and be drafted," said Bison head coach Gene Depew. "Usually it takes 16-18 months to come back from that type of injury. Kevin's still not back to where he can be, and has great potential. He has a real live arm and a real good fastball."

McDowell is the first Bison player drafted since Eric Junge was taken in the 11th round of the 1999 draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
