Hamilton, N.Y. -- The Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving teams took to the water in the first day of the 2001 Patriot League Championships being held at Colgate University's Lineberry Natatorium, and with one day in the books the Bison women hold a 12.5-point lead over Army. The Bucknell men are in third place behind Lehigh and Army.

Although not a single Bucknell woman captured gold on day one, the team's depth carried it to its early lead in the three-day event. Freshman Daniela Faas (Ludwigshafen, Germany) continued her fine swimming, placing second in the 500-free with a time of 5:02.71. Junior Abby Weaver (Lititz, Pa.) finished fourth in the 200-IM (2:10.42) and fifth in the 50-free (24.62). The 400-Medley Relay team of Darby Golino (Milford, Conn.), Barbara Morgan (Toms River, N.J.), Molly Lowe (Hamilton Square, Pa.) and Weaver closed the day with a second-place finish in a time of 3:57.17 -- the fourth-best time in Bucknell history.

The men were led by junior Chris Neary (Philadelphia, Pa.) who captured the 50-free with a personal-best time of 20.65 -- the third-best time in Bucknell history. He was also on Bucknell's gold-medal 200-free relay team that set a Colgate pool record with a time of 1:23.14 -- the third-best time in Bucknell history. Peter Garvin (Silver Spring, Md.), John Ferriter (Yorktown, Va.) and Jeff Sharpe (New Canaan, Conn.) swam the other legs on that record-setting team.

Both teams will be back in action tomorrow for day two of the championships. Prelims will get underway at 10:30 a.m., followed by the finals and consolations tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m.
