Patriot League Honors Bucknell Men's And Women's Tennis Teams

LEWISBURG, Pa - Today, the Patriot League announced that freshmen Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Zach Hascoe (Grennwich, Conn./Brunswick) were named Patriot League Players of the Month for September. In addition, sophomore Daniel Bednarek (Haworth, N.J./Bergen Catholic) earned honorable mention recognition.

Varela has a 16-3 overall record, including a 10-0 doubles mark when teamed with Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown). The Ecuador native has won the Flight B singles title at the Quinnipiac Invitational defeating Amanda El-Tobgy of Seton Hall, 3-6, 7-6, (7-1). Teamed with Globerman, the pair won the Flight A doubles titles at the Quinnipiac Invitational and the Bucknell Invitational beating UMBC's Pascaline Cette and Alice Chen 8-1 and fellow Bison teammates Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale) and Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico), 8-4.

Hascoe ends the month of September with a 6-1 singles mark. The freshman also went 4-2 in doubles play with Bednarek as his partner. Hascoe won the Flight D singles title at the Brown Invitational defeating Villanova's Sean Daly, 6-2, 6-3. In doubles play, the duo defeated teams from Assumption, Bloomsburg, and Montreal.

Bednarek has a 9-4 overall mark this season including a 5-2 singles record. He has wins over student athletes from Binghamton, Bloomsburg, Fairleigh Dickenson, Colgate and Villanova. The sophomore also has a 4-2 doubles record when teamed with Hascoe.

Both Bucknell men's and women's teams will be back in actions this Friday, October 6, as they host the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa. at the Bucknell Tennis Courts, Play starts at 2 p.m.
