Campbell, Griffiths Notch Patriot League Weekly Honors

Oct. 2, 2007

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Wallace Campbell (Montgomery Ala./Montgomery Academy) and freshman Alexa Griffiths (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) of the Bucknell cross country team earned Patriot League Male Runner of the Week and Patriot League Female Rookie of the Week honors, the league office announced Tuesday.

This past weekend, at the Paul Short Invitational held at Lehigh, Campbell led the men to a 15th-place finish of 41 teams. In the 8K race, Campbell finished in 24:44.00 for 19th of 270 runners.

Campbell has received an honorable mention for Patriot League Runner of the Week twice this season, on Sept. 5 and Sept. 25. Additionally, he was Named Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week on Sept. 24 for his performance at the Western Ontario International Invitational. Campbell has led the Bison men in each of the three meets he has participated in this season. He opened 2007 with a first-place finish at the Bison Open on Aug. 31, running a 14:40.85 in the 3-mile race. At the Western Ontario International Invitational on Sept. 22, he led Bucknell to a second-place finish of 17 schools. He ran a 31:59.00 in the 10K race, to place second out of 148 runners.

Freshman Alexa Griffiths

Griffiths scored for Bucknell this past weekend at the Paul Short Invitational, helping the women to an 18th-place finish of 47 teams. She was the fourth-fastest Bison in the 6K race, running a 22:51.00 to finish 125th of 317 runners. This is the second time this season that Griffiths has led the freshman class; at the Bison Open, she was the top finisher for the newcomers, taking fourth overall with a time of 17:52.13 in the 3-mile race. At the Western Ontario International Invitational on Sept. 22, she finished the 5K race in 19:29.00 for 35th of 147 runners.

The Bucknell cross country team is now set to travel to Easton, Pa., for the Leopard Invitational on Oct. 13. The Bison will return to Lafayette on Oct. 27 for the Patriot League Championships and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships are scheduled for Nov. 10 at Lehigh.
